Henry Coe Backpack: April, 1995
Each year the rangers at Henry Coe
State Park, in the east foothills above Gilroy, allow campers to drive
WWWwwaaaaay into the backcountry (to the Oristimba Corral) on a
weekend in April. Well, we hate to leave a challenge like this
unanswered, so we gathered a crew for a backpack from the Corral in to
Mississippi Lake! It's about 4 miles, not a problem for a crew
like ours.
Our members included VP Nikki, TREKKER editor Jeremy, and members
Danny and Nancy, plus Advisors Mr. Wesling, Mr. Marshall, and
Mr. and Mrs. Tavan. Altogether a very fine crew. Fishing in
the lake wasn't too good this year (in previous years, we had to
beat the fish off with a stick!). The one shown here was caught
by Nancy in the early evening.
We cooked a dinner high on a hill overlooking the lake, and settled
in for the night. The next day we had a sumptious breakfast, then
did more fishing (without much luck again). We did catch a really
nice (friendly) garter snake, and most of us had a chance to pet it.
Mr. W got a nap in his Sling-lite. Finally it was time to pack up
and hit the trail around the lake. Well, Nancy decided she had to
try fishing one more time -- and caught the best bass of the trip!
Here she is (woops! I wasn't supposed to show this ...) gulping
down her triple-stack sandwich as Nikki snaps the pictures!
What a trip!!
