Venturing Crew 566
Saratoga, California

CREW 566 PURPOSE:
Crew 566 exists to organize and conduct high-adventure events for the Scouts of Saratoga, Los Gatos, Campbell, Cupertino, and West San Jose. It provides conditioning experiences and medium- and long-term treks as an extension of the standard outings programs of local West Valley Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops. It can be used as an extension to standard Troop programs, serving the needs of the small percentage of Scouts interested in backcountry travel and living.

Typical Trips for a Year:

Big-Boat Sailing Adventures:

Florida Sea Base: We have a reservation for a Florida Sea Base sail in the Bahamas, in June 2008. The sign-up list is full, but you can get on the "wait list" if you'd like! (Mr. Cowles)

Big-Boat Sailing on the Bay: Out on SF Bay on a 48' sailboat, berthed in the Alameda estuary: learn how to handle sails and lines, how to understand the winds, tides, and weather conditions, etc. (Mr. W)

Winter/Snow Trips:

Snow Trek: 2- or 3-day trek on snowshoes above Alpine Lake (to Wolverine Meadow) or Badger Pass (to Glacier Point or Ostrander Lake), with towing tobbogans (Mr. W and Mr. E)

Alpine & Cross-Country Skiing: weekend trip to a Tahoe cabin, for X-country skiing at Tahoe Donner on Saturday, then downhill skiing on Sunday

Biking Trips:

Mountain Trails Riding: Day trips on trails in the Fremont Older Open Space Preserve and on the world-class paths at the old Fort Ord

Road Bike Riding: 1-day and 2-day road trips down the coast to Monterey, or in the San Luis Obispo area, with sag wagon support

Water Trips:

Canoe Camping: 3- or 4-day trip on the Sacramento River, perhaps on Memorial Day weekend, camping on the bars or river banks.

Whitewater Rafting: 2-day rafting trip on the Tuolomne River, with overnight camping on the river banks

Backpacking Treks:

Spring Conditioning Backpack: This one is tentatively planned for the backcountry of Henry Coe State Park (150 KB) on the third weekend in April, where we camp at Mississippi Lake and fish for some of the great bass that call this spot home!

Summer Conditioning Backpack: maybe in the middle Sierra, where snow has melted, sometime in mid-June

50-Miler Treks: Typical summer long treks might include our famous Trans-Sierra Trek (2007), the Marble Mountains or another prime destination. Every few years we reserve a trek at Philmont Scout Ranch -- truly the "Adventure of a Lifetime!" Requires several conditioning treks.

Easy 4-day Backpack: a laid-back trek to some Eastern Sierra lakes (about 4-5 miles), then setting up a base camp and fishing, peak-bagging, etc. Recent treks were to Little Lakes Valley, Green Lakes, Humphreys Basin, Thousand Island Lake, and Saddlerock Lake (Mr. W and Mr. K)

Other Events:

Rock Climbing: "Renting the rock" at REI for some practice on various-level routes, then up to Castle Rock or Pinnacles for some of the real thing.

Fishing Instruction: For both spin-casting and fly-fishing, at the Campbell Perc Ponds, with a master fishing educator. Learn how to do it right!

Amateur Radio: Our Crew holds the Club Call Sign "K6BSA"!!

Get your FCC Amateur Radio license from the FCC and get on the air! Join our 6-week instructional class and take the test.

Participate in one of our rradio-oriented events, such as Field Day each June (Mr. W, KM6LH)
